Pinnow, Ammann audition for Wisconsin Singers
By Ashley Graves

Everyone knows about college football and basketball, but what about music? The Wisconsin Singers of UW Madison are the nation’s premier collegiate show choir. They entertain more than 50,000 people all over the nation each year with a high-energy show featuring professional choreography and musical arrangements. There are approximately forty shows during the year. This group includes the University of Wisconsin’s most talented singers, dancers, and instrumentalists.

Many people that have been involved with Wisconsin Singers in the past have gone on to perform professionally throughout the world. Senior Sean Pinnow auditioned on May 2 to be a part of the Wisconsin Singers. About thirty people auditioned, 26 of them being girls and the rest guys. All of the people were either sophomores or juniors in college, except for Sean and one other girl. A few of the people have already been Singers, but have to re-audition every year. To start off the audition, each person had to sing one of his or her two prepared solos. When everyone was done singing for the seven judges, they were taught a modern dance combination. About 10 minutes after learning the dance combination, they had to perform it for the judges. “ Vocally everyone was pretty amazing, but dance-wise, I got the top dance scores by far,” said Sean.

Soon after the dancing, the audition was done and the people waited until the judges posted who made callbacks. Sean added. “ It was pretty much the greatest feeling in the world to see my name on that sheet.” Then, the few people who made callbacks had to sing their second prepared solo for the judges. They also had to sight sing in quartets to see how chorally correct each person was. The sight singing was the toughest part of the day for Sean because it was so advanced. After they sang, the group split and half the people went to get interviewed by the director and company manager. The other half of the people learned a second dance combination. The groups switched eventually. Sean got the top dance score again and thought he did pretty well during the interview. After all that, the easiest part of the day was measurement for costumes.

Overall, the audition lasted for almost eight hours. Sean said, “ I was so drained when it was all over, without a doubt it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.” He also said, “ I’m so relieved it’s over and that I made it to the end. All I have to do now is wait to see if I’m in or not.” Sean will find out in the first week of June if all his hard work and effort got him in.

Performing for more than 50,000 people each year, will be the new life for Sean Pinnow and Sky Ammann. Next fall, Sean and Sky plan on attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and at the UW, they hope to both be in the universities show choir, the Wisconsin Singers. To be in this group one has to have a lengthy background in music and perform an audition. The group is then chosen from the many musicians that tryout. Sean will be auditioning for a spot as a singer/dancer in the group, while Sky will be auditioning for a spot as the drummer.

The complete Singers troupe includes the best of UW Madison’s collegiate talent, 16 singer/dancers, a nine piece band as well as theater technicians, public relations and graphic art interns. The Singers travel all over Wisconsin as well as a long trip over spring break to Florida and many other states around the country. The Singers is a nationally respected group that Sean and Sky would be very grateful to have an opportunity to be a part of. Sean says “ being in the Singers will help me with my future career after college” Personally, I feel that this might be the opportunity of a lifetime.
