High-Mileage vehicle ranks in top ten in state
By Jeff Cook

The engineering class's high mileage vehicle took sixth place at UW-Stout

Brodhead High School Engineering class has been building a High Mileage Vehicle since the beginning of the semester. The class finished the car previous to the competition on April 30; making sure that everything was properly working. The HMV completed its test runs on the track and got about 100 miles to the gallon before the motor was sent to Mike Everson to be rebuilt. As the motor was on its way back, some students decided to make a few improvements to save time for testing. The motor got back and was tested; the first test run came in at 130 mpg. There are still two improvements that could be made, those being a fuel regulator, and new oil. With those things changed and a full test run our vehicle accumulated 199.5 mpg. Testing continued up till the competition but we couldn't get a consistent reading on it.

Those that went to the UW Stout competition were Mr. Matthys, Mr. Ast, Jake Updike, Eric Clark, Jake Peterson, and Jeff Cook (driver). Friday April 30, was a safety check day and the car show. During the testing they looked over the cars and did some tests. Some of the tests that the car had to pass were break check, kill switches, fire extinguisher, helmet, seat belt, fifty foot turning radius, and how fast the driver could get out of the car. Saturday May 1, was the day where every team tested their car. Each team went three laps around the designated track which equaled one run. Every team got a total of five runs. Most teams didn’t complete their total of five runs due to things breaking or running their car in to the curb. The BHS HMV was about the only car to not get held back from something breaking on the car. Brodhead finished with 148.246 MPG placing sixth out of twenty teams.
