Careers in CIA should not be overlooked
By Lisa Demro

Most of us that grew up in Brodhead wish to get out as soon as possible once the last days of high school start going down, and that’s perfectly understandable—it’s good to get out, have goals, and go somewhere in life. However, most of us go off to colleges and universities and find some sort of job that suits us and keeps our lives at a nice, steady balance; some of us become teachers, some doctors, some farmers, and others just flip burgers for the rest of our lives.

Why not try something new and exciting though? Why not look into something that you may not have considered before? Interested in doing something out of the ordinary? The CIA may be just for you then.

Sound far-fetched? It’s not as impossible as you may think.

When most of us think of career options in the CIA, we think of secret agents going on out dangerous missions, and while that is an obvious choice to go into, the CIA actually offers a variety of jobs. Some positions available would be attorneys, foreign language translators, physicians, software engineers, or social psychologists, and those are just a few off the list of jobs offered.

Perhaps one of the best things the CIA has to offer for those interested are the student opportunities. Undergraduates can apply for internships at the CIA and work on assignments with professionals that can give them in depth looks at how the Agency really works. An internship pays an excellent salary with full benefits, and if the intern does well, a permanent job offer may be extended to them after they graduate. Some of the programs available even offer $18,000 towards tuition, books, and housing if the intern works at the Agency for the summer. All interns are required to move to Washington, D.C., but the Agency helps to find housing.

Not just anyone can grab one of the highly coveted intern spots, though. Applicants must be hard working and have a strong interest in foreign affairs. Fluency in a foreign language and experience traveling and/or living abroad are both major plusses, and they need to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

So, if this sounds like an exciting experience that you would like to try, why not check it out yourself? Go to www.cia.gov and click on careers at the CIA. The page offers a great look into what applicants need, what the CIA will do for you, and what life would be like working there.

Police science program available through technical colleges
By Aaron May

Some of this years seniors are opting out of four year college to attend Blackhawk tech. One of great programs they offer at Blackhawk is the Criminal Justice or Police Science program. Basically the same thing, they offer students the knowledge they need to become the next police officers.

Several Brodhead High School seniors are going to Blackhawk for this program. Derek Seibert, Jake Updike, Mike Harding, Bryan Niedermeier, and Aaron May. Why Police Science? Senior Brian Niedermeier commented, “It’s a great program, and I am really interested in becoming a police officer.”

The course is 2 years long, and offers a variety of different classes. You have to take the required English classes, written and oral communications. You also have to take Psychology and Sociology. However if you take these classes in High School, and pass with a B average or higher, you don’t have to take them in Blackhawk. You also get to make use of several high-tech methods of learning. Blackhawk has an interactive, virtual shooting program, you get to make traffic stops, interview suspects, write police reports, and even how to fully process a crime scene.

To get into this wonderful program, all you have to do is contact your guidance counselor or call (608) 757-7710, or apply online at www.blackhawk.edu. You also have to pay a $30 application fee, supply transcripts, and maybe even have to take an entrance test.

However, if you do not wish to join the police science program, Blackhawk Tech offers many other classes. So, if you are interested in a great education without the added cost and time, check out Blackhawk Tech today.
