After a half of an hour rain delay, neither team could string together enough hits to manufacture runs. Brodhead broke through first in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Saunders. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Palmyra responded with two runs on only two hits. The Cardinals tied up the game in the sixth on a suicide squeeze by Foster. Beloit pounded out ten hits, and they were patient at the plate, drawing ten walks. Hoeper took the loss pitching four innings; Adam Johnson pitched the final two in relief. Brodhead received the sixth seed in the playoffs and will be playing at Clinton in opening round action.

Students breaking records at BHS
By Carson Hoeper

Throughout Brodhead High School history, many athletes have competed in various sports. The best of these athletes will be forever remember on the wall in the foyer until the one day where a new student comes along and beats it. It just so happens that students in BHS at this present date have achieved these records.

First, in baseball, two current students at BHS hold records. Pitcher Nic Larson broke the lowest ERA (earned run average) record with a 1.5. Nic actually broke his own coach’s, Eric Spanton, old record. “That’s just an example of the student teaching the teacher,” laughed Larson. Carson Hoeper has also broken the single season steals record with 18.

On to track, junior thrower A.J. Curtis has already broken two records for both the shot put, with a put of 59’7” and discus, with a throw of 170’4”, and breaks his own record almost every meet. “Setting the record was a real great achievement,” said Curtis, “It’s something I’m very proud of.” Also, track star Josh Restivo also broke the 200m sprint record set by former teammate Matt Henze with a time of 22.0 seconds and also broke the 110m hurdles with a time 14.4 seconds .

In basketball, junior point guard Jimmy Cole broke the single season assists record this past basketball season with 141 assists.

Next, to football, the 2003-2004 the Brodhead-Juda Cards broke a state record for being the first co-op team in Wisconsin to go to state. Also, senior wide receiver Josh Riese broke the career reception yards with 1,273 yards.

In closing, all the athletes that have accomplished these goals should be very proud. It is a very big deal to break standing records and being the best in that category. All these athletes have worked very hard to improve their skills, and it has finally paid off.
