School Lunch- food for thought
By Kristen Ruchti and Jordan Riese

Our school lunch has been described as delicious, disgusting, awesome, yummy, and terrible, depending upon whom you talk to. We do not think our lunch is as bad as what some people think. Yes, some things may look and taste a litle different, but altogether, the food could be a lot worse. We could get just the same food every day and not have any variety; then people would really complain.
Some parents would rather pack their kids’ lunches than give them money to get what they want at school. Although there are obviously some unhealthy food choices, we have plenty of healthy food as well. While some people think that the prices are too high or the choices should be healthier, no lunch program could actually please everyone. We decided to take a look and analyze the lunch situation.
Food We Have
Hot Lunch: Lasagna, spaghetti, pizza (cardboard), pizza (circle/triangle), rib sandwiches, cold sandwiches, chicken patties, scalloped potatoes and ham, quesadillas, tacos, tater tot casserole, cheese burgers, turkey ala king, pork loin sandwiches, nacho supreme, potato bar, salad bar, grilled cheese sandwiches, stromboli, chicken nuggets, french toast sticks, ravioli, corn dogs, taco pie, salad and fruit and vegetable choice.

Fast Food: Popcorn chicken, tater tots, curly fries, french fries, cheese burgers, chicken and dumpling soup, broccoli soup, vegetable soup, potato soup, chicken noodle soup, cheese sticks, yogurt, chicken patties, muffins, chips, ice cream, cookies, brownies, milk, water and juice.
Food We Could Get
Some options we should have to improve our lunch are salad bar everyday, fresh fruit and vegetables everyday, steak, taco bar and sandwich bar. If we added some different things that people like and take away some food that is not so well liked, students here at Brodhead High might have a more enjoyable lunch. For example, the main line needs to have a choice for bigger milk cartons. Maybe they could sell the pint size ones that are sold in the vending machines. Another thing we could get would be a dessert bar. Having different kinds of desserts besides cookies and chocolate bars would give students more options to think about as well. Not all the desserts would have to be un-healthy either. It could be jello or other healthy desserts.
Off Campus Lunch
Many people think we should have off campus lunch. It would make sense for at least seniors to be able to leave to eat. However, our school lunch is cheaper than fast food restaurants and really is pretty good. Going to Mc Donald’s or Subway everyday for lunch would be a waste of money. School lunches are already prepared by the time you get in the auditoria. At fast food restaurants, you have to wait in line to order and then wait for your food to be made. Also, a meal at Mc Donald’s or Subway usually costs five dollars or more. The main line at Brodhead High School costs only one dollar and ninety cents. Although some experts say that the price of school lunch goes up every year to try to get a little bit more money for the tight budget that schools have. Then again students just want the freedom of being able to go home or out to eat for lunch. It makes them feel more independent and trusted. Altogether, it makes more sense to eat the school lunch everyday.
Our school lunch is not as bad as some students say it is. The food is healthy, and it is very cheap. A few more things here and there to update our lunch would be great but for now students will just have to deal with what we have.

World Dairy Expo FFA Fun!
By Kim and Kenzi

On Tuesday September 30th the FFA gathered for yet another field trip. Everyone came early to get the new FFA bright yellow shirts. The point of the yellow color was so we could be spotted a mile away. The colors of our shirts were enough to make our tired faces look bright, happy and ready for the day! The FFA packed into Mrs. Beaty’s room while she took roll. As our names were called one by one, we walked to the big yellow cruiser, aka the bus, more yellow. The bus was cold, wet and packed to the max with people. Seniors and juniors crammed into the back and the underclassmen tried to join by making it work packed 3 to a seat. The ride to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin was long; it may have been the anticipation of getting there, or maybe the fact that the bus driver drove under the speed limit. When we finally arrived, we dropped off some of the judging team members and our advisor at the hotel where they were to judge. After sitting in tight quarters, we were finally about to get off the bus. The supervisor lady stood up and in a booming voice told us our groups and gave us our assignment. Groups were a mix of under and upper classmen and one disposable camera. The list was given out to us, and we were to take pictures by the things on the list. We grabbed the list, camera and the freshman and we were off! The Dairy expo was packed with people and things to see. There were booths everywhere full of information, free things, and not to mention the numerous foreign people. Outside, the place was packed with tractors, farm equipment, and of course dairy products everywhere. Even though it was freezing, you can’t go to a dairy expo without ice cream. So when we were good and cold, inside and out, we headed for the coliseum to watch cows walk around a ring. With all the things to do, meeting new people from different FFA chapters was the best. Even though we were having so much fun, we had to leave early so someone could make it back for their cross-country bus. Everyone sprinted to the bus to get the best seats and then sat, ready to go. Wait, no, we can’t go all because we are missing someone. Everyone was then told to get off the bus to get back on the bus in opposite order, putting underclassmen towards the back. We all then frantically evacuated the bus. As we were being lectured outside the bus, other members from different chapters are stopping to get a peak of our reaming. We all filed back onto the bus one by one very upset because of what had just happened, and then we realized that we were going to have the long bus ride home. As we rode home, everyone was in a very bad mood because of the things that went on at expo. Even though the bus ride home wasn’t the best, most of the members had a really good time at the expo until the end.
